Congresswoman Omar met with a cross-partisan delegation of Members of Ghana’s Parliament. The delegation was hosted by the National Democratic Institute, NDI, under the auspices of the Institute for Representative Government (IRG) at the State Department. The group discussed avenues for collaboration, particularly as it pertains to women’s participation in government, and ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the United States and Ghana.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar met with Aung Kyaw Moe, the Deputy Union Minister for Human Rights in Burma’s National Unity Government. They discussed the need for greater international recognition for the National Unity Government, international efforts to recognize and seek justice for the Rohingya genocide, and ways the United States can support those efforts. Congresswoman Omar reiterated her strong support for the cases before both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

A bill introduced on September 19 by Representatives Ilhan Omar (D – MN.) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D – NJ.) would establish an Office for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls within the Department of Justice. Called the Brittany Clardy Act, the bill is named after an 18-year-old woman who was murdered in 2013.

“This is a new low in House Republicans’ failure to govern. Instead of doing anything to address rising housing costs, raise the minimum wage, tackle child poverty or address the opioid crisis, Republicans have threatened to the plunge the nation into default and are now once again pushing the government to the brink of a shutdown. It’s no wonder this Congress has been the least productive in decades.

MINNEAPOLIS — Located in Phelps Park one block away from George Floyd Square, the Southside Village Boys and Girls Club is quieter than usual this week as kids settle into school routines. However, there are sometimes as many as 100 kids in the building, which consists of three classrooms, a lunch area and a gym. 

Now with a federal grant, the club plans to expand by an additional 8,000-12,000 square feet.
