Assistant Secretary Phee briefed Members on her recent visit to Niger, the growing conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the upcoming Senegalese elections, diplomatic developments in the Horn of Africa, human rights, and the Biden Administration’s commitment to improving food security and independence on the continent. The group also discussed appropriations and legislative priorities related to Africa for the 118th Congress.

WASHINGTON, DC — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) today introduced the National Advisory Council on Unpaid School Meal Debt Act. The bill would establish a commission to address unpaid school meal debt in child nutrition programs by formulating policy recommendations to address school meal debt, preventing stigmatization, and ensuring the sustainability of these vital programs. The council would be composed of fourteen members, including state food service directors, experts, parents, and cafeteria employees, appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture.

This funding responds directly to some of the most pressing needs in the Fifth District. In total, Rep. Omar has now advanced over $52 million for her district.

Frazier was the author of Minnesota's Restore the Vote legislation, a historic law signed in 2023 that reinstated voting rights to over 55,000 Minnesotans on parole, probation or supervised release after felony convictions.
