Congresswoman Omar met today with MP Karina Sosa, a Member of the Central American Parliament from El Salvador. They discussed the political and human rights situations in El Salvador, including the upcoming elections. Congresswoman Omar reiterated her long-held support for Salvadoran democracy and human rights.

WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), released the following statement on the looming government shutdown

“This shutdown is not only tragic, but completely avoidable. An overwhelming bipartisan majority of lawmakers in the House support a clean bill to keep the government open. The Senate is prepared to pass it, the President is prepared to sign it. 

Congresswoman Omar met today with a cross-party delegation of Australian parliamentarians, including the former Deputy Prime Minister MP Barnaby Joyce, Senators Peter Whish-Wilson, David Shoebridge, and Alex Antic, and MPs Tony Zappia and Monique Ryan. They were joined by Gabriel Shipton, the brother of Julian Assange.

Congresswoman Omar met with a cross-partisan delegation of Members of Ghana’s Parliament. The delegation was hosted by the National Democratic Institute, NDI, under the auspices of the Institute for Representative Government (IRG) at the State Department.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar met with Aung Kyaw Moe, the Deputy Union Minister for Human Rights in Burma’s National Unity Government. They discussed the need for greater international recognition for the National Unity Government, international efforts to recognize and seek justice for the Rohingya genocide, and ways the United States can support those efforts.
