When I first came to this country as a refugee at the age of 12, I was horrified by the number of people I saw experiencing homelessness on the streets of New York City. WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith and Representative Ilhan Omar (MN-05) announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded Minneapolis $5 million in Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction grant program funding to help low-income families and Minnesota's most vulnerable citizens. With this funding, the City of Minneapolis will improve the safety of 225 homes (both houses and apartments) for low-income families with children.
WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement after the House passed a continuing resolution to extend the provisions of the MEALS Act, legislation she passed into law this spring to provide school meals to more than 20 million children. Specifically, the continuing resolution extends the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) authority to provide schools critical flexibility for school meals through the fiscal year 2021 and guarantees that USDA can access as much funding as it needs to help schools feed their students under the MEALS Act.
