WASHINGTON–Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) will be joined at the 2019 State of the Union address by Habon Abdulle, a constituent from Minnesota's 5th District and an advocate for women in civic leadership. Abdulle is the Executive Director of the Women Organizing Women Network, a nonprofit that empowers women, particularly first- and second-generation immigrants, to become engaged citizens and community leaders, regardless of political affiliation.

The 1798 laws known collectively as the "Alien and Sedition Acts" were a set of four bills targeting immigrants under the guise of war. But many families in the Twin Cities were not sitting down for a holiday dinner — instead they were facing indescribable tragedy. On Wednesday, Nov. 27, a fire broke out in a 25-story public housing building in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, near where all of us grew up. Five people lost their lives that day.
