Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) announced the introduction of (H.R. 7477) the Workforce Promotion and Access (WPA) Act, legislation aimed at getting more Americans back to work in living-wage jobs created directly by the federal government. The bill authorizes the U.S. Department of Labor to create a job guarantee program through grants to states, localities and tribal entities where employment is greater than 10% OR double the national unemployment rate.
WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) sponsored two amendments that passed today in the INVEST in America Act, the House's bold infrastructure bill. The first amendment requires a report on barriers to public transportation faced by people in poverty. In 2015, a 24-year-old black man, Jamar Clark, was shot in the head and died after a confrontation with two white Minneapolis police officers responding to a reported assault. In 2016, Philando Castile, a 29-year-old black man, was fatally shot by a police officer in a Twin Cities suburb while Castile's partner and her 4-year-old daughter looked on.
