WASHINGTON—Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Mark Pocan (D-WI), Veronica Escobar (D-TX) announced the introduction of the Curtailing Insurrection Act Violations of Individuals’ Liberties (CIVIL) Act today, a bill to severely restrict the President’s ability to use military forces in American cities without explicit Congressional approval. The bill is a companion measure to legislation authored by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in the Senate.

Omar hosted a “Working Together to Combat Police Brutality” private listening session with Black community leaders in the Twin Cities, elected officials, faith leaders, civil rights leaders, and performing artist and activist Common. The goal was to allow members of the community and advocates to voice their concerns and recommendations for combating systemic racism at the federal, state and local level. She also discussed her new legislative package to address police misuse of force, and violence against protesters.
