Rep. Omar's statement on voting YES on the Motion to Vacate and remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker
WASHINGTON - Rep. Omar's statement on voting YES on the Motion to Vacate and remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker.
"Speaker Kevin McCarthy made it his mission to target women’s ability to make decisions about their bodies, made it his mission to cover up a criminal conspiracy from Donald Trump, and is himself a threat to our democracy. He literally voted to overturn the 2020 election results, overthrow the duly elected President, and did nothing to discourage his Members from doing the same. He represents one of the state’s most affected by climate change, but actively fights any efforts to address the climate crisis.
"Minnesotans deserve a government that works for them. They deserve institutions that are responsive to their everyday needs. And they deserve leaders in Congress who stand for democracy and the rule of law.
"Kevin McCarthy is a weak politician, who routinely put his self-interest over his constituents, the American people, and the Constitution.
"I remain ready to fight for my constituents and work with anyone who rejects the extremist MAGA agenda and is willing to make progress for Minnesotans. But Kevin McCarthy never showed an interest in doing that. For these reasons and more, I stood with my Democratic colleagues today and voted not to prop up Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker."
