Rep. Omar's Statement on the Trump Administration's Federal Funding Freeze

WASHINGTON - Rep. Ilhan Omar released the following statement on the Trump administration's move to freeze federal grant, loan, and other financial assistance programs:

“The Trump administration is waging a direct attack on the American people by freezing federal funding for critical programs that millions rely on. This freeze could cut off vital resources for Head Start programs, leaving children without early education. School meal programs that ensure no child goes hungry during the school day could be at risk. Millions of families who rely on SNAP benefits to put food on their tables could face uncertainty about their next meal. New mothers and young children could lose access to vital nutrition through the WIC program. Critical medical research, including breakthrough cancer studies at our nation's leading institutions, could grind to a halt.

“Congress, not the president, has the constitutional power of the purse. My Democratic colleagues and I will fight this scheme with everything we have. By taking this reckless action, Trump is creating chaos for communities that need stability the most. We will not stand by while this administration tries to hold critical funding hostage.”
