Rep. Omar Votes to Crack Down on Price Gouging at the Pump

May 19, 2022

WASHINGTON-Today, Rep. Ilhan Omar voted for the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act, legislation to crack down on price gouging by Big Oil companies and bring down costs for Minnesota families. The legislation takes critical steps to hold Big Oil accountable, combat excessive price increases, and empower the federal government to outlaw artificially high fuel prices.

"It is unconscionable that Big Oil companies are making record profits at the expense of working families," said Rep. Omar. "These corporations who have actively committed price gouging need to be held accountable for profiteering. Today, I was proud to vote for legislation to finally hold these corporations accountable and bring the costs at the pump down."

The Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act will enable the President to issue an Energy Emergency Proclamation banning excessively high gas and home energy prices. This legislation will also empower the Federal Trade Commission to prevent market manipulation, punish bad actors and collect penalties to support the Consumer Relief Trust Fund. These actions have widespread support, with recent pollingfinding that an overwhelming 87 percent of Americans want Congress to crack down on price gouging by oil companies.
