Rep. Omar Statement on Violence in Sudan
MINNEAPOLIS—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement on the violence in Sudan.
“I am deeply concerned about the violence between Sudan’s military and paramilitary RSF this weekend that has taken the lives of at least 56 people, including 3 Word Food Program workers, and injured over 500.
"This news is particularly devastating given the Sudanese people’s hopes for a transition to democracy in 2019 and sadly a predictable outcome of the military coup in 2021—given the international community’s failure to hold the RSF and military accountable.
"Since 2019, the military and RSF have been responsible for routine abuses against peaceful pro-democracy protesters, including the massacre at a protest outside the military’s headquarters in June 2019. The RSF in particular have been credibly accused of carrying out the genocide in Darfur.
"Both sides must immediately cease hostilities. The Sudanese people deserve the protection of their basic rights to free speech and assembly and a just transition to civilian rule.”
