Rep. Omar Statement on House Passage of Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana and Expunge Records Nationwide

December 4, 2020

WASHINGTON—Today, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released this statement after the passage of the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act in the House. This bill federally decriminalizes marijuana and expunges nonviolent federal marijuana convictions. She voted "yes" on the bill.

"This is a long overdue step to provide restorative justice to those devastated by the war on drugs," said Rep. Omar. "My community has been crying out for justice and real reform for decades. Tragically, for far too long cannabis criminalization has disproportionally impacted communities of color and ruined countless lives. Today this victory was possible because of organizers in my district and across the country who demanded meaningful reform and the end of selective enforcement of the law."
