Rep. Omar Statement on Egyptian Elections
October 4, 2023
WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement following reports of election tampering, arrests and bribery in the Egyptian elections.
"Dozens of opposition leaders detained. Buying off votes. Bribing so-called supporters. This is not how a democracy works. This is only the latest in a long line of rampant anti-democratic measures and human rights abuses under 2013 Egyptian coup leader and current dictator Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
"I am grateful to Senator Cardin for taking a first step and placing $320 million in aid on hold. There must be full accountability and consequences from the U.S.—and a halt to military aid—particularly ahead of another expected sham election."
