Rep. Omar Receives Profile in Courage Award from Town Hall Project

January 16, 2020

WASHINGTON – Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) received the "Profile in Courage" Award today from the Town Hall Project, a group that works to empower constituents in face-to-face interactions with elected officials. The award recognizes Rep. Omar's engagement with her constituents through regular town halls in spite of the continued threats made against her.

Throughout 2019, Rep. Omar hosted 21 roundtables and town halls and she and her office held more than 1,000 direct meetings with constituents.

"I believe in cogovernance. It is our job to not only speak for the people we represent, but to listen and be in constant conversation with them," Rep. Omar said. "We do not cower or hide when we are threatened, but stand proudly with our community and do the job we were sent to Washington to do."

"While over 200 of her colleagues in Congress held exactly zero town halls last year, Congresswoman Omar set a standard for courage and accessibility," said Nathan Williams, Executive Director of the Town Hall Project. "Defying attempts to intimidate her and her staff, Omar continued to hold regular public town halls with her fellow Minnesotans. Town Hall Project believes that our elected leaders can, and should, find safe ways to have face-to-face conversations with the people they work for. In her first year in Congress, Congresswoman Omar epitomized that value. We are happy to present her our 2019 'Profile in Courage' Award."

The Town Hall Project is a democratic online tool that provides Americans with information on daily opportunities to engage with their elected officials in public forums.
