Rep. Omar Attends Signing of Emmett Till Antilynching Act

March 30, 2022

WASHINGTON– Today, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) joined President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and leadership of the Congressional Black Caucus for the signing of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act (H.R. 55).

"This is a long overdue and momentous moment. From 1882 to 1968, nearly 5,000 Black men, women and children were brutally lynched in a concerted campaign of white supremacist terror," said Rep. Omar. F"or over a century, efforts to make lynching a federal crime have been met with resistance. Now, after more than 200 attempts, lynching is at long last a federal crime. Thank you to President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the leadership of the Black Caucus for championing this vital legislation."
