Rep. Omar Arrested in Civil Disobedience Action at U.S. Supreme Court

July 19, 2022

WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was arrested during a civil disobedience at the Supreme Court of the United States this afternoon, in protest of the Supreme Court stripping away core constitutional rights and overturning Roe v. Wade. These types of protests have led to arrests of lawmakers in the past.

"Today I was arrested in a civil disobedience action at the Supreme Court to protest Roe v Wade getting overturned and the assault on reproductive rights across the country," Rep. Omar said. "Our reproductive rights are under assault across the country, thanks to an extremist court with little regard for precedent or our basic rights. I will do whatever it takes, including putting my body on the line, to protect our reproductive rights."

Today, Rep. Omar published an op-ed calling for desperately-needed reform to the Supreme Court in order to save our democracy.

Rep. Omar has been a leader on reproductive justice and abortion rights since coming to Congress in 2019. She is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which passed the House last week and would codify Roe v. Wade into law, and has called for abolition of the Senate filibuster to pass the bill into law.
