Rep. Ilhan Omar Statement on Two-Year Anniversary of George Floyd's Murder

May 25, 2022

MINNEAPOLIS—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement on the two year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd.

"Two years.

"For two years we have been marching. For two years we have called for accountability for aggressive policing. For two years we have called for a system where everyone can live free from fear of violence.

"I want to thank President Biden for taking steps in addressing the demands of criminal justice advocates this week, including a national database of police misconduct, strict limits on the use of chokeholds and anti-bias training.

"But two years after George Floyd was murdered, there is much more work to be done. Communities of color in Minneapolis and across this country remain over-policed and under-resourced. Public safety—an essential function of our government—too often means resources without reform for police departments. The Senate has still not passed the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act, or even a more modest bipartisan criminal justice reform package.

"Let this anniversary, and yesterday's horrific murder in Texas, be a reminder: everyone has the right to live free from fear of violence. We need real solutions. We need meaningful justice and accountability for police violence. We need to address the root causes of injustice by investing in schools, housing, healthcare, and jobs."
