Rep. Ilhan Omar Statement on Start of Her Third Term in Congress
WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar released the following statement on the start of her third term in Congress. The first votes following swearing-in are this evening.
“I am proud to have the opportunity to serve my community in Minnesota for a 3rd term in Congress.
“This seat is not just for me. It is for the thousands of people in my district who want a Representative who fights for climate action, fights for workers, and fights to protect our democracy itself. It is for everyone who believes the United States Congress should look like and reflect the people of the United States.
“It is for the people with disabilities in Golden Valley, Minneapolis and St. Anthony who will now have renewed opportunities for affordable housing thanks to a more than $500 million our office recently secured. It is for the people on the Northside who will have an extra $1 million for food assistance. It is for the families in St. Louis Park who will have better and more affordable housing. And It is for the new mothers who will have a newly-funded birthing center in Camden.
“Co-governance is at the center of our work every day. I will strive to represent every individual of our district, regardless of who they love, how they pray, or the color of their skin. This congressional seat will always belong to the people of the Fifth District.“
