Rep. Ilhan Omar Statement on Extension and Redesignation of Temporary Protected Status for Somalia

January 12, 2023

WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali TPS holders. Just weeks ago, Rep. Omar led a letter urging this.

“I want to thank the Biden Administration for extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis. Somali TPS holders – some of whom have lived in the United States for almost three decades – face the agonizing uncertainty of their futures, and the futures of their children, many of whom are U.S. citizens. Somalia is in the midst of devastating famine and protracted armed conflict. Many Somali TPS holders would be at risk of violence or death they were forced to return.

"Granting these people the dignity of remaining in the country they call home is simply the right thing to do, and I am grateful that the Biden Administration has listened to advocates and lawmakers like myself who advocated for this. I will continue to fight for a permanent solution that provides a pathway to citizenship for all those seeking a better life in the United States of America.”
