June 22, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS – Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released a mid-year progress report of her tenure in Congress thus far, along with an interactive map of events throughout the district. The achievements highlight the work Rep. Omar and her staff have done on behalf of the 5th District.

The achievements include:

  • 48 bills and amendments introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • 19 bills and amendments passed in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • 548 bills cosponsored
  • 67,732 constituent letters answered
  • 32 roundtables and town halls
  • Over 1,300 meetings with constituents
  • Over 400 constituent cases worked on
  • $478,000 returned to constituents

"Right now, we are facing unprecedented challenges as a community," said Rep. Omar. "People across the 5th District are coming together to protest systemic racism and fight for a better world. My top priority continues to be serving the people of Minnesota's 5th Congressional District. Since becoming your representative in Congress, I have fought, introduced, and pushed for policies that will benefit all members of our community."

"This month, I brought together Black community members, faith leaders, civil rights leaders, and performing artists and activists for a private listening session. It was a chance for members of the community and advocates to voice their concerns and recommendations for combating systemic racism at the federal, state, and local level. Those who joined us included Gov. Tim Walz, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Sen. Tina Smith, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, many local elected officials and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. I also announced four bills, informed by community organizers in our district to address police violence on the federal level. The bills addressed the need for better accountability for police misuse of force, the violent police response to protests, the President's use of military action against U.S. Citizens, and the need for economic relief for communities impacted."

"This pandemic has also highlighted our public health crisis, deep economic inequality, and institutional racism. I have introduced legislation to expand SNAP online purchasing to all SNAP recipients, ensure children receive school meals, provide COVID relief funds to mixed status filers, cancel student loan debt, suspend school meal debt, provide recurring COVID payments, and cancel rent and mortgage payments."

"In order to heal and rebuild, we must implement an adequate federal response to the crises we face. I will continue to fight for a better world for all of us."
