Rep. Ilhan Omar Applauds the Resumption of Food Aid to Ethiopia
WASHINGTON – Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Chair of the US-Africa Policy Working Group, released the following statement on the Resumption of Food Aid to Ethiopia:
“I applaud USAID's decision to resume lifesaving food aid across the country. I am grateful that diplomatic negotiations have paved the way for vital assistance to reach vulnerable populations.
“In July, I led a letter with my colleague Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) in calling on USAID to resume food assistance in Ethiopia. We must ensure food aid gets to those most in need. The one-year trial period with continuous monitoring is necessary. I urge the Government of Ethiopia to fully embrace these reforms to prevent future diversions.
“The UN estimates there are more than 20 million Ethiopians facing food insecurity. Given the scope of the crisis, resumption of this aid represents the difference between life and death for many. Ethiopians have endured immense suffering. I remain committed to working with partners to provide critical support to vulnerable populations.”
