Press Release

WASHINGTON–Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) will be joined at the 2019 State of the Union address by Habon Abdulle, a constituent from Minnesota’s 5th District and an advocate for women in civic leadership. Abdulle is the Executive Director of the Women Organizing Women Network, a nonprofit that empowers women, particularly first- and second-generation immigrants, to become engaged citizens and community leaders, regardless of political affiliation. Under Abdulle’s leadership, Women Organizing Women has increased political participation of East African women in Minnesota—and trained elected leaders like Nadia Mohammed and Rep. Omar.

“Habon exemplifies the best qualities of the 5th District. She is a fierce advocate for Minnesotans—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—and a mentor to countless women hoping to make a change in their communities, including myself,” Rep. Omar said. “At a time when the President is expanding the Muslim Ban and targeting low-income immigrants, Habon exemplifies the qualities that truly make America great. I am proud to bring a fierce advocate for inclusive democracy to the State of the Union.”

“I am honored to join Representative Ilhan Omar for the State of the Union,” Abdulle said. “As someone who works to increase civic engagement of East African and immigrant communities, I can’t emphasize enough how inspiring her leadership is.  Rep. Omar is an example of the change we can achieve when we engage in our democratic process. In the face of an Administration that is attacking our democratic rights, I am proud to join such a powerful example of our democracy.”
