ICYMI: Rep. Omar Manages Floor Debate for the Preventive Health Savings Act

March 19, 2024

WASHINGTON– Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Vice-Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, managed the floor debate proceedings for the Preventive Health Savings Act (H.R. 766). The bipartisan bill aims to provide Congress with more information on the budgetary impact of preventive healthcare services, recognizing that investing in prevention, such as early detection screenings, could improve healthcare outcomes while lowering costs for families.

During the debate, Rep. Omar explained that preventive care can improve people's health while also reducing healthcare costs over time. She emphasized that the bill ensures that estimates of potential savings from preventive services must be requested by both Democrats and Republicans on the relevant committees. Additionally, the bill ensures that the outyear impact of preventive healthcare policies is only used as a supplemental estimate and cannot be used for any budgetary enforcement controls.
