Rep. Omar recognizes retired KARE reporter John Croman on House floor

February 26, 2025

WASHINGTON D.C. — Former longtime KARE 11 political reporter John Croman was recognized at the nation's Capitol for his 27 years of reporting.

Rep. Ilhan Omar took a moment on the House floor Wednesday to honor Croman, who retired from KARE back in November.

"Those who worked closely with John admired his wealth of knowledge about Minnesota politics and history and referred to him as the contact, and the context, for every story," said Omar. "John was praised for his commitment to reporting on policy over the fleeting trends of the moment, and also for his tireless commitment to reporting the truth."

Over his decades of reporting, Croman covered everything from the 1998 Comfrey tornado to Paul Wellstone's death in 2002 to the I-35W bridge collapse in 2007. He spent countless hours at the Capitol, covering session after session while breaking down polling numbers in some of the state's most historical elections.

He said one of the most dramatic political stories he ever covered was the Al Franken-Norm Coleman recount, which stretched from November of 2008 to July of 2009.

"We will miss his reporting and wish him well in his retirement," Omar said.
