WASHINGTON–Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) issued the following statement after the Rules package was announced for the 117th Congress.

“I always say you get what you organize for. And this rules package is a perfect example of progressives organizing for necessary change and winning.

“It establishes a Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth to confront skyrocketing wealth and income inequality during this crisis—and enables the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis to continue its vital efforts to ensure that federal dollars meant to confront the coronavirus pandemic are spent without waste, fraud, profiteering, or price gouging.

“This package makes historic reforms to protect whistleblowers, ban Members convicted of corruption from the House floor, and prevent the dissemination of deep fakes on Congressional accounts—which have been used against me personally.

“It ends abuse of the Motion to Recommit (MTR), which House Republicans weaponized in order to water down and slow critical bills. Along with the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I pushed to restore the MTR to its historical role as a procedural vote, instead of a poison-pill gotcha vote offered by the minority party.

“It also exempts COVID-19 and climate legislation from the ‘PAYGO’ point of order, allowing us to address the crises facing our country without setting arbitrary budget constraints.

“This is just a start. Now we need to act on the demands of our constituents and provide bold solutions that meet the greatest challenges we face as a nation.”
