Press Release

MINNEAPOLIS – Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement about the fire at a Twin Metals Recycling facility fire, after air quality in the Twin Cities was downgraded as a result of the blaze.

“The Northern Metals Fire has now been burning for over 48 hours.  It is polluting the air in the Twin Cities and the air quality rating across the whole metro has been downgraded. This will undoubtedly cause more asthma attacks, leading to more school absences & avoidable deaths in my district. As with all environmental disasters, it will disproportionately impact communities of color and low-income people.

“Northern Metals has repeatedly & willfully violated the law – and they should be held criminally liable for their negligence.  The company was subject to a lawsuit from the MPCA in 2017 after the company failed to abide by its permits. Their North Minneapolis facility was then shut down by a judge in 2019 after they were found to be doctoring their emissions reports.”
