Rep. Ilhan Omar Statement on President Biden Budget Proposal
April 9, 2021
WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement on President Biden’s FY2022 budget proposal.
“The domestic budget President Biden proposed is a critical first step to meeting Americans’ basic needs—from housing to child care to investments in schools and effective government. Support for public health research, gun violence prevention and ending homelessness are all basic responsibilities we have as a nation that were completely neglected by the previous administration. It also is a welcome down payment on a national mobilization to tackle the climate crisis.
“That said, it is simply inexcusable to continue to shower weapons manufacturers with hundreds of billions of dollars in Pentagon waste. While I support the elimination of the Overseas Contingency Fund—a slush fund used to further military engagement abroad—an increase of tens of billions of dollars in Pentagon spending, much of which will be spent on war, is simply inexcusable. Endless wars destabilize societies, tear apart families, and increase anti-American sentiment. We as a nation should be prioritizing peace and human rights over militarism.”
