WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) issued the following statement after attending the signing ceremony with President Biden to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. You can view photos of the event here.

“This is a milestone. For centuries, African-Americans have celebrated their emancipation without an official day of recognition from our country.

“Today is a landmark step on the long march to justice. But it should not be an excuse for neglecting the substantive work that is needed on behalf of the Black community.

“Now we must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to protect the right to vote. We must pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to end qualified immunity and protect innocent Black men, women and children. We must pass the For the People Act to end the corruption and influence of big money in politics. We must abolish the filibuster, a relic of the Jim Crow Era. And we must at long last provide reparations to address centuries of harm and provide resources to uplift Black lives.

“As Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.’

"And we have an opportunity in this moment, in this Congress, to bend that arc toward justice
